Upper Intermediate Hikes

Apache Leap (UI)

  Special Instructions: This hike follows a stream bed with boulder hopping and a very uneven trail to the summit. Possibly very windy and cold at the summit. Views of rock formations, hoodoos and balanced rocks. Great views of Picketpost Mountain and Superior. Bring water and a snack. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. Past Superior, go through the tunnel to Magma Mine Road, turn right. At 1.5 miles, turn left on Forest Service Rd #315. Go about 3/4 of a mile. Park along the road. Parking is limited.

Arnett Canyon – Lower Picketpost Mesa (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is a loop hike starting and ending in Arnett Canyon. The trail goes up Telegraph canyon and over a shoulder of Picketpost Mountain. Great views of Picketpost Mountain. Bring water, snack and lunch. Forest Road 4 to the Arnett Canyon Trailhead is rough and steep, it should not be attempted during wet weather.  A high clearance vehicle is preferable, but a Subaru Outback navigated it just fine. Directions: Drive Felix to Arizona Farms and turn right.  Drive 5 miles to Hwy. 79, turn left and drive 10 miles to US 60 east.  Drive 13 miles and turn right on So. Panther Road.  Drive .5 miles and turn right on Telegraph Canyon Road (at the Fire Station).  Continue on Telegraph Canyon Road for 1.8 miles (your GPS may direct you to the now closed old Forest Road 4 after 1.4 miles, ignore it).  Turn right at the Y onto Forest Road 4, cross a stream and cattle guard and drive an additional .5 mile to the trailhead.

AZT – American Flag Ranch to Ridgeline (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail that goes by the High Jinks Mine and up to a ridge overlooking the Biosphere. The hike provides great views of the surrounding mountains and San Manuel, an old copper mining town. Bring plenty of water, a snack and lunch. Directions: Take Hunt Hwy east toward Florence to Hwy 79. Turn right (south) on Hwy 79 to Oracle Junction. Turn left on Hwy 77 and follow for 9 miles to American Ave. Turn right on American Ave for 2.3 miles to Mount Lemmon Rd. (There is no advance warning for the turn-off, but there is a green sign at the turn-off.) Turn right on Mount Lemmon Rd for 3.8 miles to American Flag Ranch Rd. Turn right. Follow for 0.2 miles to trailhead parking. The trailhead is on the right.

AZT – Happy Canyon North (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail with a gentle climb through a scenic canyon. Bring water, snack and lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 towards Globe. Half a mile past mile marker 222, turn left onto FS 357. Take an immediate right on FS 8. At 1.3 miles, take left fork onto FS 650. Follow 650 for 2.7 miles to trail. Park just beyond trail and yellow pedestrian sign.

AZT – Happy Canyon South (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail through a scenic canyon. Bring water, snacks and a lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. Half a mile past mile marker 222, turn left on to FS 357. Take an immediate right on FS 8. At 1.3 miles take left fork onto FS 650. Follow 650 for 2.7 miles to trail. Park just beyond trail and yellow pedestrian sign.

AZT – Kelvin North (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail going north from the trailhead. There are views of the Gila River, a railroad bridge, and two crested saguaros. Bring water, snack and a lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd north; turn right (est on Arizona Farms Road; turn left (north) on AZ 79; turn right to merge onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. Take Exit 227 for AZ 177 south. Travel 16 miles and turn right on E Florence Kelvin Hwy. Road sign says Kelvin Riverside. Drive 1.2 miles; just before the bridge, turn right. Drive 0.2 miles and stay to the left. Look for a small AZ Trail sign. Go 0.2 miles and turn left into parking lot.

AZT – Kelvin-Ripsey Wash key exchange (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is a one-way hike on the Arizona Trail with views of the Gila River Valley and the Tortilla Mountains. Bring water, snack and lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Turn right on Hwy 60 east toward Globe. In Superior, take Exit 227 south on AZ 177. North Trailhead: Travel 15.6 miles on 177, turn right on Florence Kelvin Highway (GPS: 33.121509,-110.975383) the sign says Kelvin Riverside. The parking lot will be 2.7 miles on the left. Road is unpaved for about 2 miles. GPS Coordinates: 33.08930, -110.98989. South Trailhead: Go 4.0 miles (from AZ 177) and turn left into Ripsey Wash (large wash) (GPS: 33.096691,-111.007032). Go 6.0 miles south. You will go through a gate in approx. 2 miles, at 3 miles stay to the left at fork in wash. AZ Trail Sign is on the left at about 6.0 miles (if you come to a large water tank you have gone too far). The road is unpaved and driving down the wash is ok for 4WD or trucks (some soft sand, but very doable). Bushes/trees may result in a scratches in the paint in some narrow areas. It is important to use the GPS coordinates to locate the trailhead. The wash can change from year to year and the coordinates will be the most reliable way to find the trailhead. Trailhead GPS coordinates: 33.028107,-110.982168. If parking allows it, park your vehicle in the return direction (facing north) for hikers/drivers coming from the north trailhead. The drivers returning north should use the coordinates noted above for the turn into the wash.

AZT – Mills Ridge/Vineyard Trail (UI)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail along a ridge with great views of Roosevelt Lake, Apache Lake, and Roosevelt Dam. Bring water, snack and lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 East toward Globe. In Globe, turn left on AZ 188 North and follow to Roosevelt Lake and across the big bridge. About 2.5 miles past the bridge, turn right into Vineyard Canyon Picnic Site to use restrooms. Continue on AZ 188 for only a few feet and then turn left on Mills Ridge Rd (FR 429). Follow Mills Ridge Rd for approximately 5 miles to the end of road. This is the trailhead. Road is usually well-graded but narrow with steep drop-offs.
