Special Instructions:

We will hike into the heart of a 740,000-year-old volcano which provides a fascinating look at the geology of AZ, and have an opportunity to explore pines, spires, and hoodoos.  You may want hiking sticks to navigate the volcanic cinders, plus there is a 5’ ladder to ascend and descend.  Bring plenty of water and food for a snack.

Directions:

We will meet at the east parking lot of the Hampton/Fairfield Inns (coordinates are for the parking lot) at 990 and 1000 N Country Club Drive, Flagstaff at 9:00am. You hike leader will provide detailed directions to the trailhead which is at Milepost 247 along Highway 180 and is well signed. Turn left onto a good dirt road that will end at the developed trailhead a short distance from the turnoff. There is a parking area right at the turnoff but proceed further to the developed trailhead.
