Apache Leap (I)

  Special Instructions: This hike follows a streambed with boulder hopping and a very uneven trail to the summit. Possibly very windy and cold at the summit. Views of rock formations, hoodoos and balanced rocks. Great views of Picketpost Mountain and Superior. Bring water and a snack. Directions: This hike follows a streambed with boulder hopping and a very uneven trail to the summit. Possibly very windy and cold at the summit. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. Past Superior, go through the tunnel to Magma Mine Rd, turn right.  At 1.5 miles, turn left on FS Rd #315. Go about 3/4 of a mile. Park along the road. Parking is limited.

Arnett Canyon – Apache Tears with Overlook (I)

  Special Instructions: This is a loop hike through Arnett Canyon. There are great views of Picketpost Mountain and a chance to collect a few Apache Tears. Bring water and a snack. (Fall colors) Forest Road 4 to the Arnett Canyon Trailhead is rough and steep, it should not be attempted during wet weather.  A high clearance vehicle is preferable, but a Subaru Outback navigated it just fine. Directions: Drive Felix to Arizona Farms and turn right.  Drive 5 miles to Hwy. 79, turn left and drive 10 miles to US 60 east.  Drive 13 miles and turn right on So. Panther Road.  Drive .5 miles and turn right on Telegraph Canyon Road (at the Fire Station).  Continue on Telegraph Canyon Road for 1.8 miles (your GPS may direct you to the now closed old Forest Road 4 after 1.4 miles, ignore it).  Turn right at the Y onto Forest Road 4, cross a stream and cattle guard and drive an additional .5 mile to the trailhead.

Arnett Canyon – Picketpost Key Exchange (I)

  Special Instructions: This is a one-way hike through Arnett Canyon with great views of the canyon and Picketpost Mountain. Bring water and a snack. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to Arizona Farms Rd., turn right. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. To Picketpost Trailhead: Just past mile marker 221 turn right (south) on FR 231. There is a brown sign for Picketpost Trailhead. Follow the dirt road for approx. 0.3 miles to T in road and turn left. Follow 0.7 miles to the trailhead. Road conditions good. GPS coordinates: 33.272654, -111.177004. To Arnett Creek Trailhead: Follow Hwy 60 East to Panther Dr (GPS may say S Mary Dr). Turn right and follow past the fire station. Turn right on Golf Course Rd (GPS may say Telegraph Rd). Go 1.2 miles to the end of pavement. Continue on dirt road and turn right on Forest Service Rd 4. Take the right-hand fork and proceed a few hundred yards to park along the road near the berm. There is no formal trailhead. Road conditions fair, high clearance vehicle suggested.   Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike in Arnett Canyon with a turn into Telegraph canyon. Water crossings are possible. There are great views of Picketpost Mountain and Arnett Canyon. Bring water and a snack. AZT – American Flag Ranch North (I)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on a scenic section of the Arizona Trail. The trail starts south of Oracle State Park and offers great views of the surrounding mountains. Bring water and a snack. Directions: Take Hunt Highway east toward Florence to Hwy 79. Turn right (south) on Hwy 79 to Oracle Junction. Turn left on Hwy 77 and follow for 9 miles to American Avenue. Turn right on American Avenue for 2.3 miles to Mount Lemmon Rd. (There is no advance warning for the turn-off but there is a green sign at the turn-off.) Turn right on Mt. Lemmon road for 3.8 miles to American Flag Ranch Rd. Turn right. Follow for 0.2 miles to trailhead parking. The trailhead is on the left.

AZT – Florence Kelvin Rd South (I)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike heading south from the trailhead and meandering along rolling hills with views of the Big Hill and surrounding mountains. Bring water and a snack. (Spring flowers) Directions: Take Felix Rd north, turn right (east) on Arizona Farms Road. Turn left (north) on AZ 79. Travel east on Hwy 60 for 14.6 miles, take exit 227, and turn south on AZ-177. Travel south on AZ-177 for 15.6 miles. Turn right on E Florence-Kelvin Hwy. Road sign says Kelvin Riverside. In 2.5 miles, the parking area will be on your left.

AZT – Happy Canyon Key Exchange (I)

  Special Instructions: This is a key exchange hike on the Arizona Trail through a scenic canyon. SUVs or trucks are needed to reach the North Trailhead and regular cars at the south end. Bring water and a snack. Directions: Take Felix Rd north to AZ Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left on AZ 79. Turn right onto Hwy 60 east toward Globe. Drive 10 miles until you see mile marker 222, then drive 0.7 miles past mile marker 222, and turn left (cross westbound Hwy 60) onto East Arboretum Rd/FS Rd 357. To the South Trailhead: Turn left at the first intersection and go 0.3 miles to the intersection with E Hewett Station Rd. (unmarked) Turn right and go another 0.2 miles to the trailhead parking on the right. Unpaved miles is 0.5. Road conditions good. GPS coordinates: 33.28281, -111.17658. To the North Trailhead: Turn right at the first intersection onto FS 8. At 1.3 miles, take the left fork onto FS 650. Follow FS 650 for 2.7 miles to the trail. Park just beyond trail and yellow pedestrian sign. Unpaved miles is 4. Road conditions poor. High clearance vehicle required. GPS coordinates: 33.33164, -111.13834.

AZT – Happy Canyon North (I)

  Special Instructions: This is an out-and-back hike on the Arizona Trail with a gentle climb through a scenic canyon. Bring water, snack and lunch. Directions: Take Felix Rd. north to Arizona Farms Rd, turn right. Turn left (north on AZ 79. Take the right ramp onto Hwy 60 East toward Globe. Half a mile past mile marker 222, turn left on to FS 357. Take an immediate right on FS 8. At 1.3 miles, take left fork onto FS 650. Follow 650 for 2.7 miles to trail. Park just beyond trail and yellow pedestrian sign.
