Spring Hiking Club Trip to Cedar Mesa, Utah

This March 22 – 24, plan to join us in the Cedar Mesa area of Southeast Utah. Cedar Mesa has great hiking, and the area is filled with Anasazi Ruins, Pictographs, Petroglyphs, and other cultural wonders. We will spend two days hiking and exploring the area.

There are two towns in the area where we will be hiking, Bluff and Blanding, Utah. Both towns are small and have a limited number of motel/hotel rooms available.

Tuesday, March 22

Meet for dinner at the Twin Rocks Café in Bluff. Following dinner there will be a presentation by Don and Marsha Simonis on the archeology in the Cedar Mesa area where we will be hiking. Don and Marsha, fellow Hiking Club members, are retired archeologists who spent many years working in the area.

Wednesday, March 23

There will be three hikes:

  • Short: Hike to House of Fire Ruins, Cave Canyon Tower Ruins, and Mule Canyon Ruins. There will be time spent at each ruin, so bring lunch. Total of 3 miles.
  • Intermediate: Hike to House of Fire Ruins, Cave Canyon Tower Ruins, and Mule Canyon Ruins. There will be time spent at each ruin, so bring lunch. Total of 3 miles.
  • Upper Intermediate: Kane Gulch to Grand Gulch to Turkey Pen Ruin. There will be time spent at the ruins, so bring lunch. Total of 8 miles.

Thursday, March 24

There will be three hikes:

  • Short: Natural Bridges National Monument. View all the Natural Bridges and hike to the bottom of Owachomo Bridge, 1-mile round trip. This group will also stop at the Visitor Center.
  • Intermediate: Natural Bridges National Monument. View Natural Bridges and hike from Owachomo Bridge to Kachina Bridge. Total of 5 miles.
  • Upper Intermediate: Hike to House of Fire Ruins, Cave Canyon Tower Ruins, and Mule Canyon Ruins. Total of 3 miles.

For planning purposes, please register to let us know you are coming. Trip registration is available now. Hike Detail Sheets will be posted on the Calendar once the information is gathered and confirmed. You will be able to sign up for your hike one week prior to the hike. All hikers must be a member of the Club and must register on the Website. Guests are allowed at all other events.

Some wonderful places to visit on your way to Cedar Mesa:

  • Monument Valley Navajo National Park
  • Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park
  • Canyon de Chelly National Monument
